About Hydras Engineering
Hydras Engineering, PLLC, is a woman-owned civil engineering firm focused on water resources. We're certified as a WBE in New York and Massachusetts and based in East Aurora, NY, but our work reaches well beyond Western New York.
Alaina Smith, P.E. founded Hydras in 2023 after senior roles at Tetra Tech and Michael Baker International. Her work has taken her to rivers and streams from Arizona to Alaska and California to Maine. That range of landscapes, climates, and communities shapes how we work. We start in the field, reading the channel, the floodplain, and the history of a site. Then we back that up with 1D and 2D hydrologic and hydraulic modeling. The result is designs that make communities safer and more resilient while working with natural systems, not against them.
Alaina is closely involved in every project, especially at the start. She's on site for early visits, involved in framing the problem, and part of the decisions that set the direction for everything after. Our growing team carries that same field-first approach through analysis, design, and delivery. Our services include floodplain evaluation and flood resiliency planning, river restoration and bank stabilization, bridge hydraulics and scour design, FEMA NFIP studies, stormwater and erosion control, and drone-based site assessment and monitoring.
